Castle Ardvreck

SKU: N/A Category:

One of the most dramatic castle ruins you will find in Scotland, perched out on an island accessible only by a narrow band of shingle beach, the ruins of Castle Ardvreck are a stunning sight on this route. Situated right beside the main road, this castle has a fascinating story to tell, one dating back to the 16th century, and referring to the violent battles in this region between warring clans.

The castle was originally built by the Macleods of Assynt in 1590, however, it was attacked and captured by Clan Mackenzie in 1672, when they took control of Assynt lands. The castle stands today in ruin and is said to be the site of multiple ghost sightings of the weeping daughter of the Macleod Chief, who took her own life after being fooled into marrying the Devil.
