Nobody is born a backpacker; every traveler and adventurer has that one defining moment that they catch their own “travel-bug” and simply cannot return to the life they led before. The moment I fell in love with the freedom that nothing but a backpack, a passport and a plane ticket gives you can be refined down one moment. In 2014 myself, Gemma and two other friends were cruising along east coast of Australia in a campervan, nothing for hundreds of kilometers in any direction and the sun was setting on the horizon. To me this moment was the purest definition of what life should be like, infinite possibilities with a just the right amount of unpredictable danger, creating the perfect adventure.
After this we returned to the UK and completed our university degrees, all the while swearing that we would once again hit the road and live life as the minimalistic, edge of your comfort zone experience that it should be. We started highlands2hammocks as a way of recording our past adventures and sharing our current ones with our friends and family, with the thought that if we can inspire just one person to leave their comfortable life in their home town then we will be successful.
To have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger award by the amazing trot.world, a fascinating couple with many a tale to tell, and to be writing about ourselves and our dreams in this way is an achievement I thought impossible 6 months ago. Here are Harshita and Aman’s interesting and certainly thought-provoking questions for us:
You come across Aladdin’s magic lamp and are granted only 1 wish by the Genie (cannot ask for more wishes). What is your one wish?
Now this is an interesting one! There are obviously the classics: money not being an issue, travel being free, luscious, long hair with zero effort (Campbell’s wish). However one that is a bit more personal to us is especially important with current times, the reduction of single use plastic throughout the world. Our one wish would be to be continue to be able to advocate and promote the reduction of single use plastic. It is a task that each and every one of us will need to get on board with, but we believe it is doable!
How did you get into blogging?
We originally started H2H as a way of archiving and remembering our past adventures, as we are prior to starting it we were terrible for taking pictures of places we visit. With big dreams of travelling the world in summer 2018, we also thought this blog would provide the perfect way of keeping our friends and family up to date with our travels!
What is the best blogging or life advice you have ever received?
For me (Campbell) the best piece of advice I have heard is from my cousin about his engagement. His now wife and him had originally discussed getting engaged, however decided to do what was important to them first, such as put a deposit down on a house before spending money on a wedding. From this I learned that I should do the things that are important to me before the things that “I need to do” such as getting a job, getting married and starting a family. You have your whole life for that nonsense once you get bored!
What is at the top of your bucket list and who would you do it with?
We would love to go and see Scotland play in the Rugby World Cup in Japan 2019. We will hopefully be in Australia at that time so we should be able to hop over and explore that side of the world, while maybe celebrating a World Cup victory?
What is home for you?
For us home will always be in Scotland, as we both have fantastic friends and family that always welcome us home with open arms (and cooked meals).
What is your ideal vacation destination?
Our favourite holiday destination has got to be the beautiful island of Malta. We found this small island offers everything that we could have possibly wanted, the calm “lie by the sea and unwind” lifestyle during the day, and then the “party till sunrise” option at night. As we always say “Life is better by the sea!”.
What has been your favourite travel experience so far?
Our favourite adventure took place while we were roadtripping the east coast of Australia, on the incredible Fraser Island. We took a 3 day trip to the island for a 4×4 driving experience, and were lucky enough to be doing it alongside the best group of backpackers we could have possibly asked for! This adventure involved sand-sledging, lake swimming, lazy rivers, dingo spotting, and lots and lots of drinking. You can watch our travel video on Youtube here!
What is a skill that you’re learning right now?
Currently we are kind of self-teaching the skills and low-downs of blogging/vlogging. Having absolutely no experience with this kind of thing before (in high school I despised English, as well as anything that involves writing). However from doing this I think the most important thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t matter if you think what you are writing is stupid or embarrassing, the curse of every artist is the inability to appreciate their own work!
What is something that made you laugh this week?
As we are currently in Canada writing this, the thing that made us laugh is how well they cope with the snow here compared to the UK. “What’s that? Six foot of snow? That’s not a problem!” As long as you can get out your door here, the country keeps on ticking which I think is amazing!
What is your favourite quote?
My favourite quote is quite a well-known one. “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page” – St Augustine.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen recently?
My favourite thing to read about these days are the technological advancements that the human race is making, every single day. Days before writing this SpaceX made its first successful launch of a payload using fully recoverable and reusable autonomous rocket boosters, a huge leap towards commercial space travel. In addition to this, on a plane recently I saw that the Google translate ear pods, capable of live translating hundreds of languages with the use of internet, wer on sale for only $200! Who knows what technology will be available in the next 5 years that will revolutionise the travel industry even more.
