The Outer Hebrides - Plan Your Itinerary

The Outer Hebrides are a 130-mile-long archipelago of raw, untamed beauty. From the white sands of Harris to the archaeological treasures of Lewis and the ancient culture of the Uists, this chain of islands offers a travel experience unlike any other in Scotland.

Planning a trip here requires savvy. The islands are linked by a vital network of ferries and causeways, demanding careful attention to timing and logistics. Whether you have a fleeting five days or a luxurious fortnight, the pace of your journey will define your experience.

This guide offers three tailored itinerary structures for 5, 10, and 14 days, helping you strike the perfect balance between sightseeing and soaking up the Hebridean atmosphere.

If you’re still deciding whether this route is right for you, start with our Outer Hebrides overview first. If you’re ready to plan, you’re in the right place!

 Choosing Your Pace and Focus

The Outer Hebrides reward those who slow down. A “quick look” risks becoming a frantic dash, leaving you with little more than ferry receipts and blurry photos. Consider what you want from your trip!

5 Days

Fast/Focused

10 Days

14 Days

Accommodation Appeal

  • Car/Fixed Lodging: A car gives you speed, easy parking, and cheaper ferry fares. Booking B&Bs or self-catering means a guaranteed warm, dry spot and the chance to interact with local hosts. However, a fixed basecamp may limit further exploration or spontaneous detours.
  • Campervans/Motorhomes: A campervan offers unparalleled freedom and intimacy with the landscape, as well as being more self-sufficient and cost-effective for your Hebridean budget than a string of hotel stays. However, limited campsite infrastructure across the islands and manoeuvring on single-track roads may be daunting for beginners.

Verdict

  • For the 5- and 10-day traveller on a budget and seeking easy driving, a car/fixed accommodation is generally simpler and cheaper due to ferry costs and the ease of road travel.
  • For the 14-day traveller seeking ultimate flexibility and remoteness, and not intimidated by driving large vehicles, a campervan offers the ultimate Hebridean experience!

Outer Hebrides Itineraries

 The 5-Day Sprint

This is a focused trip designed to maximise time on the largest islands, often served by the main ferry route from Ullapool to Stornoway. It relies on good weather and early starts, and focuses heavily on the iconic landscapes and history of the northern islands.

Day 1: Arrive in Stornoway (Lewis) and check into your accommodation or campsite. Explore Stornoway town and Lews Castle, before heading north to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse.

Day 2: Tour the historic highlights that Lewis is famous for, such as the world-famous Calanais Standing Stones, the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, and Dun Carloway Broch.

Day 3: Head south to Harris and explore the rugged landscape via the Golden Road. Don’t miss out on the breathtaking beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost or Scarista.

Day 4: Take on the Clisham, the highest peak on the Western Isles, or explore the quiet southern coast of Harris and search for some local seafood.

Day 5: Use your last morning for a final visit to a favourite spot or museum before departing Stornoway for Ullapool.

 The 10-Day Explorer

This itinerary allows time for a southern detour, usually encompassing the Uists, and integrates the essential inter-island ferry hops.  This allows for cultural immersion in the Uists while still covering the must-sees of Lewis and Harris. The key is coordinating the ferry between Leverburgh and Berneray.

Days 1-4: As per the 5-day plan for Lewis and Harris, but at a slower pace, allowing ample time for specific walks and spontaneous detours.

Day 5: Travel to North Uist using the ferry from Leverburgh (Harris) to Berneray. Drive across causeways to Benbecula/North Uist.

Days 6-7: Explore North Uist with Benbecula as your base: hike to Neolithic sites such as Barpa Langass and the nearby Pobull Fhinn Stone Circle, visit the historic ruins of Trinity Temple or enjoy the serenity of Balranald Nature Reserve.

Day 8: Enjoy the peace in South Uist – for some cultural immersion, tour the Kildonan Museum, marvel at Ormacelit Castle and visit Flora MacDonald’s birthplace.

Day 9: Return to Lewis & Harris via the Berneray ferry. If you hit the highlights on your way south, don’t be afraid to return to your favourites or indulge in some scenic detours on your return to Stornoway.

Day 10: Enjoy a final morning at Lews Castle’s Museum nan Eilean (if missed) or wander the bustling town of Stornoway. There’s still time for souvenirs before your ferry/flight!

A 14-Day Deep Dive (Barra to Lewis)

This is the gold standard, providing plenty of time to fully traverse the whole chain, including the remote southern isles of Barra and Vatersay. It allows for “weather days” and genuine relaxation. This is your ultimate Hebridean adventure, allowing flexibility, extensive walking, and a real understanding of the islands’ distinct geographical and cultural shifts from south to north.

Days 1-3: Arrive at Castlebay on Barra via the ferry from Oban. Explore Kisimul Castle, Vatersay’s idyllic beaches, or watch the planes land on Traigh Mhòr (Barra’s iconic beach airstrip).

Days 4-6: Grab the ferry to Eriskay and savour the magic of the smaller isles – soak in the local community atmosphere, wander the pristine beaches, and make sure to get a glimpse of the Eriskay Ponies.

Days 7-8: Drive north via the tranquil causeways of the Uists. This is an opportunity for deep exploration of local archaeology, wildlife, and Gaelic culture. There’s plenty of time for fishing, kayaking and birdwatching too!

Days 9-11: Cross over to South Harris via the ferry from Berneray, and tour the jaw-dropping white sand beaches of Luskentyre and Seilebost or hike up into the mountains.

Days 12-14: Round off your Hebridean odyssey by delving into the wondrous historical sites that pepper the Lewis wilderness, such as the Calanais Standing Stones, as well as local museums and eateries. Spend your final morning shopping in Stornoway, or head up to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse on the north coast and marvel at the power of the Atlantic Ocean!
