The weather is hot, humid, and tropical all throughout the year. However, the time from May to July witnesses low humidity. Hence, you can plan to explore Kuala Lumpur during these months. KLCC is the most beautiful tourist site in Kuala Lumpur and a perfect place to begin your day. Take a stroll around the park and enjoy the scenic views of your surroundings. Climbing these towers is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur as it opens the door to a whole new world from above. You can capture the striking view over the city from the Sky Bridge on the 41st and 42nd floors.

Menara KL Tower

Menara KL Tower is another popular tourist spot in Kuala Lumpur and is also your next stop. If you are not sure about visiting towers back to back, well, fret not. Menara KL Tower offers a different experience than Petronas Tower.

With a height of 421 metres, Menara KL Tower is known to house the highest viewing deck in the country. The stunning views from the observation deck is something that you wouldn’t want to miss. Along with that, it also boasts a beautiful Muqarnas style of architecture.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Begin your day with a little different tourist attraction, Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. It is also touted as the world’s largest covered bird park. As a wildlife enthusiast, you can find plenty of bird species at this bird park.

The park has several sections dedicated to bird watching, such as Oriental Aviary, World of Parrots, Flamingo Pond, Brahminy Land, and Birdlife Station. The key highlights at the bird park are macaws, Indian blue peacocks, rhinoceros hornbills, cockatoos, parakeets, kites, lories, eagles, and more interesting birds.

In addition, Kuala Lumpur Bird Park also features cobbled walkways, an extensive playground, and gushing water streams. There are also rowing boats to help you tour the park. This is a great place to visit with kids in order to educate them about the rich wildlife.

The National Museum of Malaysia

Are you a museum? Even if you’re not, a visit to the National Museum of Malaysia is a must. Located in a two-storey classical Malay building, the museum showcases a rich collection of artifacts depicting different eras of Malaysia.

On the walls, there are also two giant murals beautifully embedded on both sides of the entrance. There are four main galleries in the museum that are depicted to natural history and ethnology. It is a great place to get insight into rich Malaysian history and culture.

Perdana Botanical Gardens

Kuala Lumpur has many must-visit nature hideouts, and Perdana Botanical Gardens is definitely one of them. Sprawls over an area of 226 acres of land, the Botanical Gardens boasts an ecosystem that includes fruit trees, tropical plants, a lake, sunken gardens, and a waterfall.

The best thing about this park is that entry is free. However, there is also a Butterfly Garden which requires a ticket to explore. Apart from that, the garden also has a Deer Park, Bamboo Playhouse, and Laman Perdana, which is a hangout spot.

Central Market

Day 2 of your Kuala Lumpur itinerary will Sum up with a market tour. Central Market is one of the most touristy destinations in the city which is flocked by thousands of visitors every day.

The market was established in 1928, and since then, it has been an integral part of Kuala Lumpur tourism. This is the perfect place to be for shopaholics. Located just off Petaling Street, the market is famous for selling handicraft goods.

Along with shoppers, the place is also a haven for food lovers and art buffs. Not only this, Central Market also offers you opportunities to indulge in other activities as well, such as massage, henna art, and fortune telling.

Day 3

Ethnic Areas

Kuala Lumpur isn’t just about nature and city life. There is also an ethnic and cultural side to it which you cannot afford to miss. So, on the third day of your Kuala Lumpur tour, you will be covering the ethnic side of the city.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Located 5 minutes walk from the Bird Park, Sultan Abdul Samad Building is another popular tourist site in the city centre. Dating back to the 19th century, this place is known as the oldest Moorish-style building in Kuala Lumpur. It is named after the former Sultan of Selangor – Sultan Abdul Samad.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building is not only a popular attraction for its rich history and heritage but also for its unparalleled architectural beauty. The special thing about this building is the fact that it is entirely built of bricks, and its architecture includes a strong influence of Moorish design.

The building includes a porch with a 42 metres high clock tower that adds up to the beauty of its architecture. Today, it serves as a popular sightseeing place for tourists, especially history buffs.

Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square is undoubtedly the most popular public square in Kuala Lumpur. Despite being a square, it has a peculiar beauty that lures tourists. Also known as Dataran Merdeka, the square is located right in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

It was once a cricket-playing area which has now transformed into an important unique square that is known to celebrate independence day and host political rallies.

You can stroll around the square and witness the amazing architectural beauty and vibrant vibe associated with it. Not only this, you can also capture beautiful views of the surrounding in your camera lenses.

Little India

Brickfields is one of the most popular neigbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur, located on the western edge of the city. Now, this part of the city is also known as Little India. Wondering why?

Well, it is because the neighbourhood is home to the Malaysian Indian community and their businesses. It is a huge street lined up with Indian restaurants, eateries, and boutiques.

If you have never visited India, this is a small opportunity to learn about the country in a gist. However, if you have been to India, a trip down the memory wouldn’t make a bad choice, right?

Besides, you can also shop for Indian commodities such as spices, sarees, flower garlands, local food, and much more. During the time of major festivals like Holi and Diwali, this place gets decorated and lits up to its extreme beauty, making it a sight to behold.

If you are looking for a good bag for your time exploring Kuala Lumpur, we can highly recommend the Wandrd Bag PRVKE 41L, especially if you are carrying camera equipment around the city. If you are looking for a smaller backpack, The Nest by Tropicfeel is one of the most comfortable bags I have ever owned and perfect for a city break.

Chinatown

Though Chinatown is considered an offbeat place, it is one of the best places to explore in Kuala Lumpur. Steeped in rich culture and history, this part of the city is a tourist destination in itself.

There are plenty of tourist attractions in this part of the city, including Buddhist temples, art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants. Not only this, the place is also known for its shops selling Chinese herbs.

The market is located on Petaling Street, which is also the city’s main market district. It is a place that comes alive at night with its shops and vibrant ambience. There are plenty of amazing things to do in Chinatown which will keep you up on your feet.

Day 4

Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur

On the last day of your Kuala Lumpur tour, we are leaving it open. If you have missed any attractions, you can explore them on your own. However, if you want to stick to our itinerary, then suggest a day trip to Batu Caves.

Batu Caves

Your trip to Kuala Lumpur is incomplete without Kuala Lumpur. It is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur in 4 days. Located in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves are limestone caves that can be explored. You might recognise them from the colourful staircase leading up to them.

As a part of Batu Caves, the three major caves are Cathedral Cave, Museum Cave, and Art Gallery Cave. Within the caves, there are 3 large and a few small temples that make the place even more interesting.

These temples are dedicated to Hindu mythology and have a huge significance for the Hindu community in Malaysia. Besides, the temples are also minimally adorned with statues and paintings relevant to Hindu mythology.

Irrespective of their religious significance, these caves are flocked by thousands of tourists every day just to watch the natural marvel. Such is the popularity of this tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur that many documentaries have been made on it.

Before You Leave for Kuala Lumpur

Before you leave on your trip to Kuala Lumpur, there are a number of things you will need to get organised in order to ensure a smooth and successful trip. These include getting a visa, sorting out travel insurance, deciding on what to pack and booking a place to stay in Kuala Lumpur. All of these points are discussed in detail below.

How to Get to Kuala Lumpur

In order to get from the Kuala Lumpur international airport to the city centre of KL, you have four main options. These include:

  • KL Airport Shuttle Bus  – Price roughly 10RM – Time 1hr 15min
  • KLIA Express Train – Price roughly 55RM – Time 28-30min
  • KL Transit Train – Price roughly 55RM – Time 35-40min
  • KL Airport Limo and Taxi Service – Price 60RM (taxi) / 100RM (limo) (+50% between midnight and 6am) – Time 40-50mins

All of these options above leave from both KLIA 1 and KLIA 2 terminals EXCEPT the KLIA shuttle bus, which only runs from KLIA 1. You can transit between the two terminals using the SkyBus shuttle service.

We would recommend either booking a taxi to your hotel as then it will be waiting for you when you arrive at the airport or booking a train on the KLIA Express here.

What to Pack for Your Trip to Kuala Lumpur

The tropical climate of Malaysia ensures that there is only one temperature in Kuala Lumpur, HOT. The midday sun in KL is sweltering, with the only relief being during the daily downpours of rain that happen around 2pm like clockwork.

Thankfully, this means that packing for Kuala Lumpur is a light and simple task. Most of the clothing you will be packing will consist of floaty clothing, shorts and vests, with an exception of a waterproof (like these men’s/women’s ones) for the daily monsoons that KL is subject to. We suggest packing a poncho into your day bag for when you are out and about, just in case the rain catches you off guard.

For our full list of items that we pack no matter where we go in the world, check out our full packing guides over here.

Given the beautiful sights and scenery that you are no doubt going to see around Kuala Lumpur, we highly recommend packing a good camera for your trip. If you want to read more about the cameras we use and why we love them, check out the link below.

You can read what else we keep in our camera bag over here.

What is the Best Travel Insurance for Kuala Lumpur

I know travel insurance is the least enjoyable thing to purchase and look at when you’re planning a trip, however, you wouldn’t want to be without it in the event that something happened. Accidents can happen anywhere and the extortionate medical bills will ruin your trip if you are not covered.

To ensure you have a stress-free trip with no worries about potential medical bills, make sure you cover yourself when you travel. We can recommend using SafetyWing, a backpacker-friendly and cheap insurance company that provides good coverage and support. It is also nomad-friendly, unlike most other insurance companies, meaning you do not need to worry about being out of your home country for too long.
