What is the Little Chapel?
The Little Chapel is a beautiful building that was built by Brother Doedat in 1914. He was attempting to build his own version of the Notre Dame Grotto in Lourdes.
It is made of shells and broken pieces of china and is a marvelous place to visit whilst you are in Guernsey. There are benches in the area and also boards that you can read more about the Little Chapel itself.
The Little Chapel is located in Saint Andrew’s, in the Les Vauxbelets valley. There is parking outside the gift shop or if you choose to get the bus, it is on bus route 71.
History of The Little Chapel
The Little Chapel was first built in March 1914 and measured 9 feet long by 4.5 feet wide. Brother Doedat was criticised for this build by his brothers and demolished it, starting again in July 1914. This time he built the Little Chapel measuring 9 feet by 6 feet, however, the Bishop of Portsmouth visited in 1923 and couldn’t fit through the door.
Deodat demolished the Little Chapel again soon built it again for the third and final time, measuring 16 feet by 9 feet.
Today, the Little Chapel is under the care of Blanchelande College.
When to visit The Little Chapel
The Little Chapel is open daily between 9am-4pm during the summer months. It is free to enter, however, public donations are relied upon to keep the Little Chapel running.
We would recommend visiting at quieter periods, not in peak tourist season or school holidays as it is a small attraction and may get busy.
You can go inside the Little Chapel and explore. There are some narrow stairs inside that are also worth going down to explore further. The inside is just as unique as the outside.
