What to Pack for Nusa Penida

Given Bali’s warm, tropical climate, packing for Bali is actually really simple.  Bali has two seasons: a wet season and a dry season. Throughout the year, the temperature on the lowlands and islands of Bali is an average of 30oC, This of course means light clothing is your best choice for the trip. Given the likelihood of rain during your trip, a waterproof jacket is also highly recommended. If you are heading to the mainland of Bali as well, and plan on chasing waterfalls in the more northern territories, the temperature tends to drop as the altitude increases. Packing a warm layer of clothing, such as a jumper or hoodie is also recommended. With regards to sun protection, the tropical sun that Bali is blessed with can also prove very dangerous. Too much exposure to the sun can result in nasty burns, dehydration and even death. Do not spend long periods of time in the sun and make sure you drink plenty of water. Pack plenty of sunscreen for your trip to Bali, as the price of this on the mainland and islands is incredibly expensive. A small, 200mL bottle of sunscreen will set you back as much as £15.

Given the beauty of island of Nusa Penida and its sights such as Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you are going to want to pack a camera. We made sure you packed our camera bag full to the brim with our camera stand, drone, camera and GoPro to make sure we got he best shots. If you are planning on doing a one day trip to Nusa Penida, then a Nusa Penida tour package is the best option for you. If you are going to spend a few nights on Nusa Penida (which we highly recommend), then you can make your own way to Nusa Penida by public boat or fast boat. All of these options are discussed below.

One Day Nusa Penida Tour Package A one day trip to Nusa Penida typically lasts from 8am till about 6pm, from sunrise until sunset. You will leave first thing in the morning, taking the fast boat across to Nusa Penida, and join your tour guide for the day at the ferry port. Your tour guide will then take you around the island to all of the best spots, and will even double as your private photographer for the day. For the ultimate, one-day, Nusa Penida tour package, book your tour right here.

Nusa Penida Fast Boat from Bali

Nusa Penida speedboat leave from both Sanur and Padangbai to Nusa Penida, travelling frequently throughout the day. This trip will take you roughly one hour, getting you to Nusa Penida for around 10am. By taking the boat yourself, you will be able to explore this incredible island at your own leisure, drinking in the sights with no worry of a schedule. Make sure you book your Nusa Penida fast boat in advance to secure a spot, as they do tend to sell out quick. Browse all of the tours and fast boat options for the Nusa islands right here.

Public Boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

The public boat to Nusa Penida is by far the cheapest option, however it is also the longest and slowest option as well. This is the best option for you if you are not in a rush and plan on spending a few days on Nusa Penida. There is no longer a public boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, instead it has been relocated to run from Padangbai. This unfortunately means that the public boat to Nusa Penida is only feasible if you are travelling from Ubud, as it is much further north than Canggu and Kuta. The public boats of Bali tend to run once or twice a day at varying times. For as little as £2, you can get yourself a spot on the boat, which leaves Padangbai once the boat is full.

Getting Around Nusa Penida

Once you are on the island of Nusa Penida, you have the choice of two options in order to get around. You can choose the expensive and much safer option of a Nusa Penida Tour Package, or you can choose the much cheaper and much riskier option of renting a scooter and driving yourself.

Buy a Nusa Penida Tour Package

As I said, this is the much safer option for getting around Nusa Penida and once you arrive on the island you will see why. The road over here are not maintained, at all. Some parts of the island literally consist of potholes and ridges, meaning that even the large, comfortable cars you are driven struggle. This is also the best option if you are short on time and only plan on spending only one day on the island. With a private driver you will get to choose between your own itinerary of sights to see, or you can simply follow their own preplanned itinerary. Your driver will not only take you to the best spots at each sight (some of which can be overlooked if you go alone), but they will also be your personal photographer for the day. Book your own private Nusa Penida, one day tour right here and get planning your ultimate adventure.

Rent a Scooter and Tour Nusa Penida Yourself

By far the cheaper option, but also the much riskier one too. As I said before, the roads on Nusa Penida are not suitable for riding a scooter on unless you are very experienced at doing so. That being said, if you take your time and are sensible with your limits, there is no reason you can’t explore this island to the fullest on scooter.

You can rent a scooter either from the ferry port at which you arrived, or you can rent one from your hotel or homestay that you are staying with. A scooter will cost you roughly £4 a day on Nusa Penida, a bit more expensive than the mainland but still very reasonable.
